Nikon Z6 85mm F1.4G vs. Sony A7iii 85mm F1.4 GM vs. Fujifilm X-T3 56mm F1.2

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

In this article, I will talk about my thoughts on the full frame mirrorless cameras Nikon Z6 with 85mm F1.4G, Sony A7iii with 85mm F1.4 GM and Fujifilm X-T3 with 56mm F1.2 R. I will have some comparison side by side examples throughout this blog post so you can check out the differences. Before I get into the main content, I want to talk a bit of my reason to rent these cameras and lenses.

Reason

Since the previous blog post, I have created many more comparison content for my YouTube Channel. I have been using 56mm F1.2 R ever since I started to use the Fujifilm X-T1. This is my favorite portrait lens in Fujifilm. So I want to see how this lens comparing to the almost full frame equivalent 85mm. I chose the Nikon 85mm F1.4G and Sony 85mm F1.4 GM.

Side by Side Comparisons

My Thoughts

Here are some of my thoughts on these comparisons:

  • Nikon Z6 - I like the feel of the Z6 body while shooting. It feels comfortable in my hands.

  • Nikon 85mm F1.4G - it is softer at wide open than I expected. Out of these three lenses tested. Nikon 85mm F1.4G is soft at the center when look at it closer. I sometimes thought if it's in focus.

  • Sony 85mm F1.4 GM - I am very impressed with this lens. It is very sharp at wide open. I shot this lens at Chinatown for street style as well. The bokeh is very nice.

  • Fujifilm X-T3 white balance - After more than half year of shooting Fujifilm X-T3, I can say that X-T3 improved on the auto focus. However, the auto white balance in X-T3 is leaning toward colder tones. I noticed under the same setting as the X-T2, X-T2 color is warmer and better for sunset and backlight photos.

  • 56mm F1.2 - This is still my favorite lens for the Fujifilm line-up. I think besides the little bit less depth difference with the full frame lenses, the 56mm is still holding up very well.

Thanks so much for reading and continuous support in my Instagram: @caliallstaring and in my Youtube Channel: Xing Liu.
